Engineering

Today we prepped foam for our undertray. Using 40pcf foam, we shapped a mold blank. This i sthe first time we have used foam for our molds. I made the decision to use foam due to the added complexity of this year’s undertray. After doing research I determined that we needed a high density polyurethane foam board that is at least 30 pcf. We will use the foam to generate a male mold. The inner dimensions of the tray is most crucial so there is no need for a female mold.

After talking to several companies I found B rated foam from coastal enterprises that i was able to source as a donation. We used a B rated foam because it was free and because we will not run our piece in an autoclave there is no safety risk of air pockets bursting. In all we recieved 3 tons of foam to work with.

Based on the model generated from our aero engineer i worked with jim covington from Harbor Sales to piece the parts into workable foam blocks that the 3 axis gantry bot could manage. We originally planned for a 16” ball mill, but could not get the tool made in time. This would have allowed for a near one piece mold. The software we used was artcam. A gui strong cam software.

Swam 56 laps in the pool cause I thought it was a mile, and but then I found out it was 66. First time swimming laps in 13 years. I missed the smell of chlorine on my skin.

Intro

I just finished my second workout of 2012. I am planning to get in shape again this year before summer. I was in great shape last fall, but then my school work got in the way. Normally i say such a claim is a poor excuse but when i get to school at 8am and dont get home till 1am i have cut myself some slack.

So to describe me, i define myself as a unique individual. I always look for others like me but i have yet to find someone. I am not someone looking to set an example for others. I have my own rolemodels that i look up to. My life however has been quite an adventure so far.

From early on until highschool their is not much worth mentioning. I was an eagle scout, I played football, was in the marching band, and i was successful. Yet life was still difficult for me. I was never a popular kid, but this isnt about life’s tragedies. Life is tough at times but it gets better. By the laws of the universe karma statistically exists. I hated me told what to do and i loved learning things on my own even if it took longer or lead to a few bumps and bruises. I could have never predicted the actions i have taken, but in retrospect i understand how one event had led to the next.

Life really got interesting after highschool finished. The first thing i did was get in shape. This helped me increase my ability to be successful nodoubt. I became an engineering student at the University of Maryland and now am one semester away from graduation. For two summers i worked on boats sailing in the carribean. I would dive everyday, eat fresh seafood and other delights until my belly would burst, i fished when i was bored, got that perfect natural tan while reading all the novels i had been putting off, and i met friends from around the world while doing so. I swam with sharks and turtles and dolphins, i could hold my breath for nearly 4 minutes, and i learned to survive on the water in a way that others only read about in the stories of captain nemo and blackbeard. I thank my captain Lance for all the great adventures he has shared with me. I lived a dream life that i hope to one day return to.

After that i worked for a few months as an engineer for Disney World. I have been a fan of disney for a long time. While there i experienced the secrets that make the magic happen. And while the company suffers many of the faults of a major corporation, they have a secret that even pixi dust cant beat. Its the people. No matter how tough or how many mistakes the corporation makes, the people that you see on tv or in the parks, even the guests, are the ones that create the sensationalism one can only feel with disney. The greatest friends i made since my childhood were made while employeed for the mouse. The city of orlando will always be my favorite city as no greater times were had then the ones i had spent with my friends in the nightclubs and venues of the area. For anyone working there a great nearby place to escape the hustle and bustle is a little town nearby called St. Cloud. My advice just go explore the area and get lost. There is so much to find.

Finally i had to return to school, although i still fantasize of running back to florida to chase all the great memories still to be made. Yet now i am on my latest adventure. I am well into leading the University of Maryland’s collegiate formula racing team. Check out terps racing. We build a top level race car every year. Its an experience like no other. This car does what other people only dream their car could achieve. Thrill of driving it is heart stopping. And the experience has revealed new horizons i can not wait to explore. It is thos experience that keeps me so busy at school. Nearly 80 hours a week i am doing work for the team, but i do it because i love it.

I have had some amazing experiences for someone that is only 22. If i were to die today i would do so knowing i have lived more in my short life than most do in four times that of mine. Yet i am not satisfied with where i am now. I will always be hungry for more and will always strive to do more. This is my life. My little world and it is ever expanding.
